Dato che in italiano sulla descrizione di questa specie non ho trovato nulla ho messo insieme le varie schede in inglese e l ho tradotto, più o meno bene; magari a qualcuno sarà utile (come per esempio a me) quando decidera di allevare questa specie molto bella...

Distribuzione: Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brasile, Paraguay, Argentina e Peru.
Questa tartaruga vive in fiumi e laghi con acque tranquille e fondali fangosi. La temperatura dell’acqua deve essere mantenuta intorno ai °C. Nei periodi in cui la temperatura dell’acqua scende sotto i valori consigliati e opportuna istallare un riscaldatore. Il pH deve avere valori compresi tra 6.0 e 6.2.
L’acquaterrario deve essere abbastanza grosso perchè le Phrynops geoffroanus raggiungono 35 di lunghezza del carapace e adorano nuotare, è quindi consigliato allestire zone dell’acquaterrario in cui il livello dell’acqua sia abbastanza alto, anche 40 cm. Il fondale deve essere allestito con sabbia o ghiaietto fine.
E’ inoltre necessario istallare un neon per rettili che emetta raggi UVA e UVB e uno spot riscaldante per il basking; infatti le Phrynops sono tartarughe che adorano crogiolarsi al sole e usufruire dei sui raggi benefici sopra rocce e tronchi.
Queste tartarughe in natura sono generalmente carnivore; in particolare si alimentano con piccoli pesci, insetti, lumachine d’acqua dolce e raramente con la vegetazione acquatica.
Non è consigliato allevare le Phrynops geoffroanus con altre specie di tartarughe.
Come in altre specie di tartarughe il sesso lo si può distinguere dopo qualche anno di età osservando coda e piastrone. Infatti i maschi hanno coda più grossa rispetto alla femmine e il piastrone è leggermente concavo per favorire l’accoppiamento.

Io non allevo questa specie ma so di sicuro che la temperatura dell'acqua deve essere sempre intorno ai 27°-28°C e non effettua assolutamente il letargo...

Personally I keep Phrynops tuberosus which was a subspecies of geoffroanus in earlier times.

A Water temperature of 27°C is not necessary all the time, they even do well at 20 - 22°C. I have talked to a guy who was in Venezuela to search for mata matas and he told me that the water in 1m depth was about 25°C.

My turtles also like to swim, but only if the light is dimmed. They are most active shortly after sunrise or when it gets dark. No UVB Light is necessary since they feed mostly on stuff like whole mice, fish or pellets. These foods already contain vitamin D3 which can be used by this species.

I have them for 1 year now and this summer I had my first clutch of 12 eggs and I hope for more to come!
