you are the best... mai name's robert
No, Sir, I am not the best. There are so many much better Tortoises breeders over there in Italy, I am sure in it. Thanks to God, I am still able to keep good breeding stock of mine over here, but I am affraid - in short future, I will not be able to do it. Bureaucracy will ask me to stop my bred, or to reduce number of my animals on minimum.
So, before to come in it, I would like to do my best to all other breeders, asking for help and giving any possible helps and favors. I hope, you understand me!
The future of rare species is in captive bred only, no other solution possible. Independing on high protection of Hyacinthine Macaws (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) in Brazil as example, the number of this birds in wild is decreasing from day to day. Local Indians are killing them for food, and they are having not knowledge and interest about CITES and IBAMA.
In Australia, local farmers are killing by guns thousand Cockatoos daily, including Galah, Major Mitchell's, Long-billed Corella, etc.., because they are eat corn and grain. But, in the case you would like to buy one Australian Cockatoo on local market only, You could get penalty of many thousand dollars, to into prison, and have ban to accross Australian border for at least 5 years.
Also, as you know very well, in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China, the people are eating Turtles and Tortoises. Not in few heads, than in thousand and thousand heads surely. Independing they are very rare of common ones. They are not interested in rarity and protection, they are looking for meat only.
The future of Angonoka in Madagascar (Plough-share Tortoise = G. yniphora) is very doubtfull, too. Independing on high protection of this species worldwide, there are only one farm of this species in north of Madagascar. And, everyday, animals are going out from this farm surely. Finaly, the number will arrive near zero, but nobody on the world could get permit to breed this species in captivity, providing good future stock of them, and make their reintroduction to Madagascar when necessary. Its bred is the same as for Radiated T., and captive number could increase very quickly!
No, Authorities are thinking, the passive protection is fruitfull and it will solve all problems. Active protection, i.e. captive bred are appearing like criminal activity, and from this reason, we are loosing many wild animals species everyday and every minut!
Yours truly, Marco
