Ciao AleeHali

Ciao
Dear friends,
I am tryin the whole morning to find exact Indirizzo, the contact phone numbers, as well as e-mail address of great farm in Mauritius having very big stock and big captive production of Aldabra Giant Tortoises (Dipsochelys dussumieri dussumieri), and maybe - small stock of D. d. arnoldi.
So, they are having good stock of this species for sale each year, and the price, of course, is depending on the age and size of animals avialable. Shortly, with enough money available, it is possible to buy the fully adult specimens, too, i.e. specimens of the size 120 - 140 cm of size. But, there are two reasons to not buy big animals like this:
- very expensive supplying price, as well as enormous frieght charges;
- poor aclimatization potential of so big animals like this.
It is always better to buy few heads of young to medium size animals, and to make good artificial conditions at your place. I am having good knowledge, well aclimatized Aldabras are strong and healthly animals, and will have very long life in captivity.
Of course, when bought young or medium size animals, you must be ready to wait so long expecting their future bred. Independing they grow very quickly, you should have animals of the age of 25 years approximately, to expect their breeding maturitu, and potential clutch. I hope, you will understand me!
The Mauritius farm's animals are going with price of US$ 1,000.00/each FOB for the size of 10.00 cm approximately, and increasing depending on the size (US$ 1,500.00 for the size of 15.00 cm/head approximately, US$ 2,000.00 for animals of the size of 20.00 cm, and so on.). For fully adult ones, they are asking between US$ 20,000.00 to 25,000.00/head. Of course, this price is not so expensive for rich ZOO Gardnes, but for private breeders it is enormous (due to high investment in breeding enclosure for this species, too).
Around 12 - 13 years ago (maybe more!?), one U.A.E. animal dealer have imported 10 - 15 heads of young Aldabras from Zanzibar. Then, he kept them for some time, and after that, he sold some of them out. (I am not sure, but I am thinking, on that time U.A.E. was not member of Washington Convence!?). Anyway, few years ago, I found 3 heads on his farm in Sharjah only. They were beautifull animals I would like to buy them, becuase selling price was very, very good. US$ 3,000.00/each. The supplier could provide U.A.E. CITES export-permit with source F. I was sure, my Authorities will accept this permit, and I will get Import-permit very easy.
I found way to deliver three successive pet birds shipments (common birds species as Budgerigars, Cockatiels, Australian Parakeets to U.A.E, and cover difference in money, and I bought these 3 Aldabras (1 male, plus 2 females with no doubt).
Then, after received necessary export-papers from U.A.E., I asked for Import-permit to transfer these animals to me. But, in the meantime, appeared the changes in our CITES Office, and I received nothing. No Import-Permit because the permit of origine is with source F, etc.., etc...
I bought animals, with no chance to import them. The seller was interested to keep my animals no more, I was not interested to sell them to somebody other. In this terrible situation, I found solution to transfer my trio of Aldabras to the place of one good friend of mine in Asia, and he is keep them over 3 years now. In the moment, they are having over 50 kgs of weight (the male up to 60 maybe, I did not check it). They are in very good health and condition, and they are having no problems to endure outside temperature of 10 centigrades on night time easy.
So, this species do not need extremely high temperature as many people is thinking about. No, they should be protected on winter time of course, but as older they are not so sensitive animals!
Shortly, my trio of Aldabras is still outside, and maybe - it will be forever. I am working to find way how to get acceptable permit to import them to my place, some chances could appear maybe, but I am not sure in it. They will stay in Asia forever, maybe!
I have got informations about farm in Mauritius 15 months ago, but I already spent my money in Aldabras, to come into new investment like this!
Warmest regards, Marco
